Our plan is to ride half a day to Mackinaw City and rest and do laundry. Then a zero day om Mackinac Island before heading west accross the UP. We've been riding hard and rest is important. That still leaves us 4 days to cover the roughly 280 miles to Green Bay by Saturday. It's raining when we woke up. We gathered our gear and cooked an egg breakfast under the pavilion at the beach.
It seems we always start at around 7:15 when it's light enough and we are ready to go. By the time we get into Harbor Springs it is raining again. This is a pretty town with rows of huge old mansions along the lakefront. After some back and forth we chose to follow the lake rather than the shorter but gravel trail to Mackinaw City. This turned out to be a good choice. The roads were quiet and mostly flat. In the tiny Cross Village we got out of the rain and had coffee with blueberry muffin. The woman in the store was so friendly. She gave us some route tips which were great. Always good to have local advice.
We rolled into Mackinaw City around noon, tooled around a bit, and found a campground a mile from town. After drying out gear and having lunch we found that there is no coin laundry in town. Guess we'll stay stinky! Decided to just rest and enjoy the little beach looking out to the Straits of Mackinaw. Eventually went into town which is basically a tourist trap, had a beer, and met up with Mark at Scalawags. Mark took the gravel path and said it was a muddy ride. They have the best fried white perch in town. A local specialty.
